CakePHP is a web application framework modeled after Ruby On Rails. It is free and open source, and is intended to help developers create web applications in a quick, organized manner. While it is modeled after RoR, it also is intended to take advantage of some of the strengths of PHP.

Like other application development frameworks, CakePHP attempts to make the development process faster by automating or otherwise streamlining repetitive development chores (add/edit/delete content, for example). CakePHP can also create "scaffolds" which is like a skeleton content management system created automatically based on the structure of the database back-end being used by the applications. Many developers like CakePHP because it uses PHP, a language many are already using or familiar with.
